Many human industry traces dating from inferior Palaeolithic, witness the populating ancientness. From Phoenicians to independence in 1956, Tunisian history is marked by an astonishing suite of invasions and various influences: Phoenician, roman and Arabic Muslim. Tunisia has been the first country in Maghrebi to become Arabic. Today, it seems to be a stability pole in the area.
• 264 - 146 BC: The three Punic wars against Rome. They had arisen the fantastic expedition led by Hannibal. He crossed Alpes mountains with his elephants. (218- 202 Av. JC). These wars ended by the defeat of Carthage.
• 146 Av. JC- 439: Settlement of the first roman colony Africa. They country became very prosperous. Agriculture and urbanization progressed.
• 439: Vandals conquered Carthage
• 533 : Byzantines regained Carthage.. Byzantines reign.
• 647 – 698: Beginning of Arab Muslim era. Foundation of Kairouan by Oqba Ibn Nafaa (in 670) and conquest of Carthage by Arabs (in 698).
• 800 – 909: Expansion of Islam and settlement of Aghlabid dynasty. Building of Zitouna Mosque in Tunis. At that time Kairouan is the political and intellectual centre of Maghrebi.
• 909 – 1159: Fatimid and Zirid dynasty. Mahdia which was founded in 921, became the country’s capital. 909/1148: to be checked.
• 1159 – 1230: Almohads unified all Maghrebi countries and Muslim Andalusia.
• 1236 – 1574: Hafsids, Almohads vassals, declared their independence and founded a new dynasty in Tunis.
• 1956 (March 20th): Tunisia obtained its independence.
